NursingPain Management Nursing Exam Study Guide


The American Nurse Credentialing Center organizes and conducts the pain management nursing examination. This examination certifies those nurses who are able to apply pain management skills appraising care for patients who have been under going through chronic and acute pain.

Eligibility for Pain Management Nursing Exam


The candidate must be a registered nurse with an associate or diploma from an accredited 2 year nursing program. The candidate must have worked for two years in full time in pain management field and at least 2000 hours in past three years.

Format for Pain Management Nursing Exam


This is a computer based exam with 175 questions in total out of which only 150 are scoring while the other 25 questions are for future references. All the questions are in the multiple choice format. The total time allotted for the completion of examination is three hours. The Pain Management examination covers the following subject areas:

  • Pathophysiology of Pain
  • Pain Assessment
  • Interventions
  • Side Effects
  • Patient/Family Education and Counseling
  • Collaborative/Institutional Issues

The Pain management  certification is valid for three years. At the end of that program the registered nurse would have completed 1000 hours of employment in pain management and has at least 75 hours of continuing education. The renewal fee is $160 for ANA members and $290 for non-members as long as the practice hour and continuing education hour requirements are met.
