Trauma Certified Registered Nurse TCRN Exam


Trauma Certified Registered Nurse TCRN Exam is designed to evaluate and analyze nurses or the care professionals for their knowledge & skills in emergency medical situations. The nurses who have received specialized training in medical cases are required to handle emergencies. If the nurses wish to attain advanced designation or capabilities then they must take the Exam to receive certification as TCRN.

Eligibility for Trauma Certified Registered Nurse TCRN Exam


Candidates are eligible to take Trauma Certified registered TCRN Exam if they follow the conditions-

  • Candidates must have a registered Nurse License from the United States or its territories.
  • The nursing certificate must be equivalent to an RN License in the USA.
  • Candidates must have undergone 20 to 30 hours of trauma care coursework and an average of 1000 practice hours per year in trauma nursing i.e. the candidates must have 2 years of trauma nursing experience.

Syllabus for Trauma Certified Registered Nurse TCRN Exam


The syllabus for TCRN Exam covers the following core areas-

  • Clinical practice, extremity, and wounds
  • Clinical practice, head, and neck
  • Clinical practice, trunk
  • Clinical practice, special consideration
  • Continuum of care for trauma
  • Professional issues

The practical aspects being evaluated are assessment, analysis, implementation, evaluation, a continuum of care.

Format of Trauma Certified Registered Nurse TCRN Exam


  • The allotted time for candidates to complete the exam is 3 hours.
  • There are 175 multiple choice questions in the exam. Only 150 are scored from the total number of questions.

How to apply for the Trauma Certified Registered Nurse TCRN Exam?


Applying for the exam online is simple. Candidates can apply online through the Board of Certification for Emergency Nursing where they are required to create their profile. BCEN later sends candidates exam eligibility emails once applications are processed. Upon approval, candidates have a 90 days testing window to take the exam.

Note- Candidates are required to bring two latest and valid forms of Identity. It can be a government-issued ID card.

The exam is administered by the Board of Certification for Emergency Nursing (BCEN).

Fee for Trauma Certified Registered Nurse TCRN Exam


Members of the Emergency Nurses Association, Air and surface transport nurses association, and society of trauma nurses are required to pay USD 230. Non-members are required to pay USD 370 for the exam.

Score- Test scores are received after the candidates complete the exam.

The Validity of the Certification


TCRN exam certification is valid for four years and it can be renewed if the candidates meet qualifications criteria.
