The certified neuroscience registered nurse certification provides recognition for a level of excellence in nursing care for a patient with neurological conditions. The CNRN are required to work in the areas of spinal cord injury or with patients who suffer from chronic neurological disorders.

Eligibility for CNRN - Certified Neuroscience Registered Nurse Exam


Those who are appearing for the CNRN examination must be a licensed registered nurse who must have worked in neuroscience nursing for 2 years for full time or 4160 hours. This may include working as an educator or providing direct treatment to neurological patients or as an administrator.

Format for CNRN - Certified Neuroscience Registered Nurse Exam


The CNRN exam is offered twice a year. This is a computer based exam whose registration costs around $250 for members of American Association of neuroscience nurses and $335 for non members.  The combined fee to join AANN and to register for the exam is $348. The CNRN examination consists of 220 questions out of which 20 are for future references and while the 200 questions are scored. The subject matter of the examination may include questions pertaining to following issues:

  • Neurological trauma
  • Neurosurgical issues
  • Rehabilitation for the patient with neurologic compromise
  • Specific disease processes that affect the neurologic system.

The CNRN certification is valid for five years.
