Medical Lab Assistant Exam


The American Medical Technologists association developed a certified course called CMLA or Medical Laboratory Assistant test that can be taken under certain circumstances by any medical professional. This is a nationally-recognized exam practically evolved for health practitioners. The MLA test, like any other AMT test, evaluates the knowledge of entry-level professionals in the field, intending to examine their competence and education. After successfully completing the exam, young medical professionals can apply to any medical assistant position available, with a fully certified background.

Eligibility for Medical Lab Assistant Exam


For taking the MLA test, a professional needs to meet certain requirements set by the AMT. There are two ways of eligibility, and these include:

  • Through education - After finishing an academic course with 200 didactic hours combined with 120 hours of clinical laboratory experience.
  • Through work experience - After working for 1040 hours in the field of laboratory technology in the past three years.

Documentation needed for application to the test includes Official final graduation transcript or high school diploma with documents proving laboratory experience. If the applicant has graduated in more than 5 years, documentation of 6 months experience in the last 3 years is also needed. The tests are available every day year-round after making a test-taking appointment, except for Sundays and holidays. The Medical Laboratory Assistant test fee is a total of 120$.

Syllabus of Medical Lab Assistant Exam


The Medical Lab Assistant Exam consists of four work areas:

  • Laboratory safety - 45 questions
  • Pre-examination considerations - 36 questions
  • Examination considerations - 83 questions
  • Patient test management, foundations, and communication - 36 questions

Format of Medical Lab Assistant Exam


The test is administered via computer or in paper-and-pen form. It is timed and can take up to 2 and a half hours to complete. It is a multiple-choice test, with four possible answers to choose one from. In the test, there is a total of 200 questions. The test results are available almost immediately after taking the test, in the testing facility.

How to apply for Medical Lab Assistant Exam


Every test taker needs to pass six steps in order to take their MLA test and in the end, receive the test results. These steps include:

  1. Apply online on the AMT website - This includes investigating whether the applicant meets the standards of the test.
  2. Reviewing handbook - Available on the website, every applicant should be aware of these steps.
  3. Waiting for e-mail confirmation - The AMT will have to confirm the application of the candidate has been approved.
  4. Scheduling a test session - All tests are administered over a computer in specially designed testing facilities.
  5. Attending examination
  6. Receiving results
