Virginia Standards of Learning SOL
The Virginia Standards of Learning, SOL, is an exam that is meant to test and establish the minimum expectations with respect to what students should know as well as be able to do at the end of each grade. This is in respect to Mathematics, English, Science, Social science among other subjects.
The SOL is used to test the above-named subjects with the aim of establishing the success of the students in meeting the expectations of the Board of Education for learning and achievement. The tests are reviewed by the Virginia classroom teachers for accuracy and fairness. The teachers are also involved in the setting of the proficiency standards for the tests. The Board of Education uses the exams to identify the schools which require assistance and necessary support.
Eligibility for the Virginia Standards of Learning SOL Test
- Students in grades 3-12 take between 2-4 SOL tests per year.
Syllabus for the Virginia Standards of Learning SOL Test
The test majorly covers English, Mathematics, Science, History/Social Science. Basically, the SOL tests are taken online. Computer adaptive format equips each student with a customized assessment according to ability level.
Local benchmark assessments are also taken at intervals as the students prepare for the SOL test. Computer adaptive testing involves all students through grade 3 to grade 8 Mathematics tests.
Students who fail the SOL test in elementary and middle school under extenuating circumstances or through narrow margins are allowed a re-sit for the exam. Teachers are involved in the review of the SOL tests.
Format for the Virginia Standards of Learning SOL Test
The reading and writing tests include interactive non-multiple-choice items. The exams require the students to apply what they have learned. The exception for online exams is given to documented disabled students and the disability-related issues that necessitate pencil-and-paper tests.
