North Carolina General Curriculum Test


The North Carolina General Curriculum Test is a multiple-choice certification exam evaluating a teacher’s comprehension of fundamental teaching skills in the State of North Carolina. Entirely content-based, this test covers a range of topics including Language Arts, Social Sciences, Science, and a variety of Mathematics topics.

Candidates are evaluated on their Language Arts skills, Reading Comprehension, and other crucial topics for Reading Assessment and Instruction. Test takers must receive at least 227 on the General Exam at least 229 on the Reading Exam to be considered passing. Candidates who pass the exam receive a lifetime teaching certification that will remain valid in the State of North Carolina unless it is revoked by the North Carolina State Board of Education.

Any person who wishes to become a North Carolina General Education teacher may take the North Carolina General Curriculum Test, however, they must meet identification requirements.

Syllabus of the North Carolina General Curriculum Exam


The North Carolina General Curriculum Exam includes two sections. The first section is a multi-subject section with roughly 15 multiple choice questions: Language Arts (30%), History and Social Science (30%), Science and Technology, Engineering (30%), and Integration of Knowledge and Understanding (10%). The second section is only mathematics and comprised of roughly 27 questions. It covers Numbers and Operations (41%), Functions and Algebra (22%), Geometry and Measurement (18%), Statistics and Probability (9%), and Integration of Knowledge and Understanding (10%). The exam measures the teacher’s competence in the general education curriculum.

Format of North Carolina General Curriculum Test


  • There are 45 multiple-choice questions and 1 open-response question.
  • The multiple-choice section of the general curriculum exam is divided into two sections.
  • Test takers are given 2 hours and 30 minutes of testing time.
  • You must receive at least a score of 227 to be considered passing.
  • It costs $94.
  • A 15-minute computer-based tutorial will be issued at the beginning of the exam.
  • Format of North Carolina Foundations of Reading Exam


    • There are 100 multiple-choice questions with 2 open-response assignments.
    • The test is divided into two sections with four subareas.
    • The first section is multiple-choice. It contains three subareas which are Foundations of Reading Development (35%), Development of Reading Comprehension (27%), and Reading Assessment and Instruction (18%).
    • The final section is an open response. It covers Integration of Knowledge and Understanding (20%).
    • Test takers are given an allotted 4 hours of testing time.
    • Must receive at least a score of 229 to be considered passing.
    • Exam registration costs $139.
