Court Reporter Exam Study guide

A court reporter exams are conducted by NCRA - An Association of court reporters and captioners. The Association providers various exams

  • Registered Professional Reporter (RPR)
  • Certified Legal Video Specialist (CLVS)
  • Registered Merit Reporter (RMR)
  • Registered Diplomate Reporter (RDR)
  • Registered Realtime Reporter (CRR)
  • Certified Reporting Instructor (CRI)

Registered Professional Reporter (RPR)

This is an entry level certificate provided by NCRA. All current and aspiring stenographers can take this certification. Membership of NCRA is not mandatory. However if you want to renew the certification you will need to maintain your NCRA membership and earn a minimum of 3.0 CEUs over a three-year period.

Online skill test

  • Literary at 180 wpm
  • Jury Charge at 200 wpm
  • Testimony/Q&A at 225 wpm
  • Dictation test which allows the student for 75 minutes of transcribing the dictation

70% is required to attain certification.

Certified Legal Video Specialist (CLVS)

Certified Legal Video Specialist certification is designed for legal videographers to showcase proficiency in video deposition practices. Apart from the applicant showcase test of video deposition they should also be able to attain 70% in written knowledge test

Registered Merit Reporter (RMR)

The Registered Merit Reporter (RMR) is NCRA’s is for mid-career court reporters, those looking for the next level of networking, and those looking for a potential salary increase. To attain this certification the applicant should be a member of NCRA and also be a certified Registered Professional Reporter

Registered Diplomate Reporter (RDR)

This is the highest level of certification provided by NCRA. This certification is designed for professional who would like to showcase their reporting excellence. To be certified as RDR,its mandatory for an applicant to be a RMR and have five current and continuous years of membership commencing with Participating or Registered member status.

A written knowledge test will be administered and candidates should be able to clear the exam by 70%
