The physical therapist (PT) exam assesses whether or not the licensure candidate has the basic entry-level competence to become a certified physical therapist. The physical therapist assistant (PTA) exam assesses whether or not the licensure candidate has the basic entry-level competence to become a certified physical therapist assistants.

Both NPTE and NPTAE are computer-based tests administered by the Prometric testing centers.
