The NSCA-CPT exam was developed in 1993. The purpose of the exam is to identify individuals who are competent enough to use an individualized approach to assess motivate and train clients.

The NSCA-CPT exam is offered in both computer-based and paper-and-pencil format. It consists of total 140 questions of which 130 are scored while 10 are pretest. Also the first 35 questions have a corresponding video. The questions in the examination cover the following content areas:
