NCIDQ - National Council For Interior Design Qualification Examination Study Guides - Overall Overview


The NCIDQ exam consists of three parts and covers six aspects of the interior design field:


Programming
Schematic Design
Design Development
Contract Documents
Contract Administration
Professional Practice

NCIDQ offers the exam twice a year. This exam is designed to assess the candidates knowledge of the health, safety, and welfare aspects of interior design. It is a two-day exam divided into three sections. Sections 1 (Building Systems, Codes, Construction Standards, and Contract Administration) and section 2 (Design Application, Project Coordination, and Professional Practice) are given on the first day of the exam. Section 3, administered on the following day of the exam, is a full-day practicum consisting of seven different exercises. You will be required to produce design solutions for each exercise.

Six different eligibility routes for the NCIDQ:


NCIDQ preparation Route 1

A bachelors or masters degree from an interior design program accredited by the Council for Interior Design (CIDA) with 3,520 hours of qualified interior design work experience

NCIDQ preparation Route 2

A bachelors degree in an interior design program NOT accredited by CIDA and 3,520 hours of qualified interior design work experience

NCIDQ preparation Route 3

A bachelors degree in any other major and at least 60 semester credits of interior design coursework generating a certificate, degree, or diploma along with 3,520 hours of qualified interior design work experience

NCIDQ preparation Route 4

At least 90 quarter credits of interior design coursework and 5,280 hours of qualified interior design work experience

NCIDQ preparation Route 5

7,040 hours of qualified interior design work experience along with At least 40 semester or 60 quarter credits of interior design coursework resulting in a certificate, degree, or diploma

NCIDQ preparation Route 6

A bachelors or masters degree from an architecture program accredited by the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB) or the Canadian Architectural Accrediting Board (CAAB) in addition to 5,280 hours of qualified interior design work experience after the degree is earned

Apart form NCIDQ other interior design courses include the Certified Kitchen designer (CKD), Certified Bath designer (CBD) and the council of qualification of residential Interior designers (CQRID) These exams are specialty examination developed by specialty organizations to test their own membership while the NCIDQ exam is administered and developed by independent testing.
