Foreign Service Officer Test FSOT Test Preparation Study Guide


The Foreign Service Officer Test is administered with the purpose of measuring a candidate's knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to work as a Foreign Service Officer. The test is taken on-line at selective test centres.

Eligibility For The Foreign Service Officer Test (FSOT):


To be qualified, the U.S. Bureau of State requires that every hopeful be:

A U.S. native on the date the hopeful presents the enrollment bundle .

No less than 20 years of age and no more established than 59 years old on the day the competitor presents the enlistment.

No less than 21 years of age and not yet 60 on the day the hopeful is named as a Foreign Service Officer.

Accessible for overall assignments, including Washington, D.C.

Format For The Foreign Service Officer Test (FSOT):


The FSOT is administered on-line in multiple-choice format. It consists of an Oral Assessment and a written test. The written test is divided in the following three sections:
Job knowledge
English expression
A biographic information
The oral assessment is conducted to measure a candidate's ability to demonstrate 13 dimensions essential for Foreign Service work. It includes a group exercise, a structured interview, and case management writing exercise. The candidates are supposed to complete the examination in three hours.
